As a service, we invest in and care for our young people by providing bespoke quality support across various areas to meet their needs and assist their development. Each young person will be allocated a key worker who will support them with any of their needs, questions or concerns. The specific role of the key worker will be to mentor and offer guidance to young people about journeying into adult life. They will also provide support to young people with:
We also provide assistance to access support such as:
Firstly, we see ourselves as partners with the young people we support so we always strive to build a positive relationship with them. In achieving this level of partnership, we aim to always:
We recognise and work within the values of Care Matters, that all young people leaving care need continuing support to make a smooth transition to adulthood. We see ourselves as partners and a valuable resource to children’s services in delivering good quality services to young people, providing young people not only with a positive, safe living environment, but a bridge into adult life. We work closely with other relevant professionals to offer the relevant support to support young people to achieve the best outcomes.
Our service is unique in that we can also facilitate self-contained apartments and floating support as a pathway to independence from our supported accommodation, once a young person arrives at the age and ability to live independently.
We can help young people to maintain their own independent accommodation through our Stay Connected scheme. This involves continued one-to-one mentoring and floating support by the key worker a young person they started out with in our supported accommodation. We appreciate that whilst in care many young people will have experienced a few changes in workers. At Key Steps we strive to change that and help young people to maintain a level of continuity in the working relationship between them and their key worker they have become used to and build trust in. We understand that young people may feel a sense of security knowing the support they received from that one familiar face would still stay connected to them through our stay connected scheme.
We understand that many young people who come into our service may not have the type of support network around them that they can tap into and feel safe with crossing the bridge into independent living. At Key Steps we always thrive to maintain a supportive network around the young people we support even when they move on to independent living, we maintain a positive and supportive relationship with them.
At Key Steps we encourage young people to get involved with community activities, in this way they can encounter into contact with positive adult role models that will encourage them to see the world in different ways and put their own values into a wider context.
We encourage young people to try out community activities that we believe gives young people the chance to learn new skills and apply ones they have already learned. For example, they can use the cooking skills they learned from us at a community project. This kind of experience may give them the chance to see how many skills they have and how valuable they can be.
